Our last flight search test is ranked by Google at # 1 for the search term flight search engine , but unfortunately he is already getting a bit old. 1.5 years ago we tested the flight search portals. It was high time to check who offers the best flight search in 2016. At that time, we compared over 220 fares with 22 providers, in 2016 we have taken in the period from 01.03.2016 to 12.05.2016 now 30 flight search portals in the test, over 500 fares on 20 routes(more than twice as many routes as last time) checked by hand and the cost of the 20 tracks added. In order to be able to compare the fares better with each other, we have defined flight times and further, always identical constraints for each previously selected flight route (eg direct flight or a maximum of 1 change). In addition, we have always selected the same payment method (Mastercard credit card). We did not consider flight search portals that did not find a flight for further test rounds, so they flew out. Another condition was that the providers are free. Of course, the test conditions limit the generality, but in our eyes they are necessary to be comparable. More about the test conditions can be found at the end of the article.those who want to compare the new results with the old ones will find the previous test here )
The best flight search portals 2016 (1st half) – Category Price test
On the 1st place momondo.de landed and became test winner of the toptestsieger.de flight search price test 2016. Congratulations!
The complete Top 10 ranking:
The top 3 of the ranking have “delivered” an exciting race, idealo.de was altogether only 0,42% more expensive than momondo.de, skyscanner.de 0,97%. Swoodoo.com and dohop.de made it into the Top 5. Overall, the overall results of the top 7 providers are quite close to each other, we could observe a little larger distances to momondo at goeuro.de and billigflieger.de.
place Flight search portal Total cost in € Difference to test winner
1. momondo.de 9,573.67
Second flug.idealo.de 9,587.09
Third skyscanner.de 9,638.85
4th swoodoo.com 9,822.14 2.84%
5th dohop.de 9,861.76
6th kayak.de 9,874.99
7th checkfelix.com 9,911.25
8th. check24.de 10016.53
9th goeuro.de 10250.03
10th billigflieger.de 10258.67
There were 3 other providers who have found at least all flights on all 20 routes in the flight search, the difference to the test winner momondo and the top 3 providers was already clear at fluege.de for example. The result for fluege.de suffered especially from the fact that they demand quite high fees for the use of a “normal” Mastercard.
The other 17 flight search portals (see end of article) unfortunately had to leave each after they had not found a flight with the appropriate parameters.
Differences of 3% or 7% do not sound particularly high per se, but it pays off to look at the results in detail, since the differences can be quite high in percentage terms. The following table shows that, especially for low-price short- and medium-haul routes (MS), the percentage differences are higher than in the long-haul area (LS).
If you split the test results in short- and medium-haul and long-haul, google flights, waymate.de and uberflieger.de are also worth mentioning. Google flights was in second place after the short and medium distances, Waymate.de, which had won our last flight search test, ranked 5th. Uberflieger.de at least 10th.
Flight Search Heatmap
If you compare cheapest and most expensive flights of all providers on each route, you can see that the differences can be as high as 200%, eg on the Berlin-London route (46.98 € via uberflieger.de and 139.61 € via cheap airlines. de). The biggest price, absolute difference we have found on the route Hamburg – Sidney: 1114.75 € has cost the flight that we found on momondo.de, 1451.23 € we would have had to pay for the flight us cheapfly24. de picked out.

Flight Search Test – difference between lowest and highest price
By the way, Momondo has not only resulted in the cheapest flight bookings on the whole, momondo was also the most often the “round winner”. 6 times momondo.de has directed us to the cheapest flight booking. idealo, skyscanner, swoodoo total 2 times, dohop.de 3 times, kayak.de 1 times, checkfelix.com 1 times, check24.de 1 times, goeuro.de 3 times, billigflieger.de 1 times, cheapfly24.de not even , opodo.de 1 times, fluege.de 1 times. (Note: the lap wins do not add up to 20, as there were 2 round winners on the Frankfurt – Berlin route, on the Munich – Hanover 12 route, on the Düsseldorf – Cape Town route 2). Also noteworthy are the in between excreted: waymate.de, who could register at least 3 round profits, google flights with 1 round win, uberflieger.de with 1 round win and kinkaa.
No flight search engine will always find the best price, it is recommended that once you compare the offers found with the results of other flight search engines. Because often it’s not about who finds the best price or flight at all, but who has negotiated with the booking pages the best conditions regarding service or credit card fees. If 2 flight search engines are routed to the same booking portal, the same price will not necessarily be available there. A prominent case: if a customer searches for a flight directly via fluege.de and pays with a “normal” MasterCard (ie not with the fluege.de Mastercard), he pays a hefty credit card fee. Does he first search the flight via momondo.de, select the fluege.de search result there and then pay with fluege.de also via Mastercard,
If you want to book round-trip flights anyway with the same airline, eg because this is the cheapest option, it is also advisable to compare this with a direct booking with the airline. Sometimes there are even cheaper flights, or the same price offered. In many cases, the direct booking is not cheaper. It is often much more expensive when flying with different airlines. In particular, we do not recommend individual bookings with airlines if the time buffer between flights is not big enough during stopovers.
Sometimes you save a few euros if you not only click on the cheapest provider, but compare the first 3 providers and go to the last booking step up to the payment data. Still only some of the air searches show the total prices including the payment fees. If you want to pay by credit card, but do not enter your credit card details for your own price test, you can get credit cards in the dummy data (of course you can not pay anything).
In addition, one should also be aware that many of the booking sites to which the flight search engines lead, not at all from Germany, or are not offered by German companies. Although the offers are available on .de domains, a look at the imprint reveals the company headquarters, which is often located abroad. If you want to play it safe, find out your cheapest German booking provider out. However, we always recommend, especially with smaller providers, to look for current reviews for these providers.
Here, the providers of the flight searches are asked to create more evaluation options for customers and to display possible seals of quality in the flight search, or even to test these providers themselves once and to check. In addition to incorrect payment information, this is in our opinion one of the biggest homework that the providers have to do.
To the test:
We performed the test in the period from 01.03 to 12.05.2016.
We have tested 20 different routes, including 10 short and medium distances and 10 long distances (for a detailed list see below)
The departure airports were all in Germany.
Before the test, we defined departure and / or arrival signs for outward and / or return flight as well as several other parameters for each route: direct flight or max. Number of stopovers, checked or hand luggage. On a track in one of the last rounds of testing, we have made it a condition that at least one German provider is forwarded (since all non-German flight searches, where one could book directly also had been eliminated, this has not distorted the test)
For each of the 20 routes we have specified (or left open) certain departures and / or arrival times
The payment method was always a Mastercard credit card, as it is accepted without exception by all booking portals. Otherwise, the cheapest flights were difficult to compare, since some booking portals offer only low payment fees for very rarely used payment methods.
The flight searches were always carried out in succession.
The order of the test has been changed continuously.
We have always taken the cheapest flight from the provider indicated as the cheapest and have gone to this provider until the last booking step, so we could understand all service and credit card fees.
We canceled and rechecked 2 runs because there were either too few tickets or increased demand and the ticket prices changed during the test run (we repeatedly checked this during the test runs by re-testing previously tested flight search engines within a test run) to see if maybe have changed in general)
In total, we examined 30 flight search portals, in addition to those listed above, another 17 portals tested. However, these have dropped out of the test because they have not found a flight on a route with the conditions we have previously defined, although these flights were still available. (The number after the name of the flight search indicates the reason for leaving the test, explanation follows below).
