Hi Clive,
I was at St Judes 1952 to 1958. Got caned a couple of times by Mr. Mott who often stood in the playground stirring his tea as we filed back to class.
Was there a Miss Love as well? The other teacher I remember well was Mrs. Schofield who presided over the library class. Mr. Poole (my form teacher) who took us to the park for football. Mr Harris Jones was my last teacher before l left and went off to live in Wales.
We lived in Balfour Crescent off Tettenhall Road except for a couple of years in Claregate, my sister and I would travel in by bus and then walk through Gibbs Street past the bone factory, remember that place when the wind was from the wrong direction!
Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon. Going to buy tea in Snapes then waiting for the bus in Queen Square with my mother and wondering why all the flags were at halfmast, because the King has died said the lady next to us….no TV in those days.
I never went back for years and when I did got lost on the ring road. lol

I lived in dunstall Rd in 1948- 154 after being born Springfield in 1937s,after we left dunstall Rd it became a police station,I worked at Willoughbys Decorators for nearly 4 years but have happy memories of West pk,Bright St,Rex,Charlie’s cafe. Happy Times!

Oh love this thank you. 3 generations of my dads family Edwards hunt, later jones grew up on Ablow street.

Hi Heather, Stafford Street – North Street my playground, born in 1937 in Nursery Street covered now as most of the area is, by the University. Any tale of stafford Street is like grist to the mill for me. Oh I wish you had shared this story with me before your mom and dad past on. I would have loved to talk to them. What were their names? I would certainly like to see their drafted plan I have similar ones A.4 size of Lower Stafford Street

Why no dates mentioned Graham, I remember them building the garage circa 1960 state of the art roof as I recall.

If my my memory serves me right wasn’t he in some sort of partnership with Brian Payton, and another couple of chaps in the late 1960’s, with their own small pitch in the wholesale market.

I think it must have been around 1958 at the time I came out of the forces and returned to my existing job at H. Goodhall in the Wholesale Market at that time, in Wulfruna Street.

If I remember correctly Arthur was working for Dick Walley, a rival firm.
He later joined the Goodall staff where he and I shared the vegetable pitch as Salesmen.

He sold the Green veg (appropriate wasn’t it) and I sold the Root veg.
I was only in contact with Arthur for about five years or so and during that time, I have fond memories of him.
I believe I am correct when I say shortly after he started working alongside me he had an operation for Bowl Cancer which slowed him up considerably. As I recall he had a son, I must have met Mrs. Green because she and Arthur joined us on our yearly outings with Goodalls.
After 1965 I only worked on occasion in the Wholesale Market in Town and Hickman Avenue, so lost contact with Arthur never knew anything about the shop etc..

Do you know where Philip & Yvonne Howe live now in Australia, I have an address in Greenwith Adalaide and have written several times to them but haven’t heard from them for a long time. I just wonder have they moved. I worked with Yvonne at the Eye infirmary .Wolverhampton in the 1950s. Philip and Yvonne came to my wedding in 1961 we were best friends, I would love to hear from them again. and wonder how their two sons are, Mark and Stuart. Hi Christine. I also went to Birchfield St nursery and Red Cross St School about the same time as you. In fact, I remember your name, and am sure we were friends. Are you related to Miss Westwood, who if my memory serves me right had a grocery store just off Christ Church island, and used to deliver groceries in a Morris car/ van?
My maiden name is LUE. I have wonderful memories of Red Cross St. I can still picture the classrooms in my mind, and would love to see some photographs.

Thanks for getting in touch Martin – Whites Field on the Cannock Road was St Peters and Pauls regular football pitch in the 1947-48 Season – I played against them for Red Cross Street – on a Saturday morning the score 1-1.

No, Martin, I played right back, can’t ever remember scoring a goal We played our home matches then on the Recreation Ground on Red Hill Street, the clinic was probably built on there when you were at Red Cross Street.

Hello Jane. Yes I remember the McNally’s they were scattered all a round North Street . From the time they came from Ireland in the mid 1850’s until the 1950’s 60’s when the bulldozers moved in. You will find the name on early census’s from 1871 in Lawyers Field also Joseph Patrick was householder in In 1923 at No.5 Lawyers Field with Mary Ann at No.18. in 1956 Tommy was at No.5, and I recall a Mattie McNally also in that same street in the 1950’s. I myself started school with Frank in 1948 ( He passed away about five years ago. I hope that helps. Do you live locally?.
